교회와 업데이트

가령 아무리 정교하고 멋지게 만들어진 지도가 있다 해도 그 지도가 실제 지형과 맞지 않는다면 그 지도는 지금 내가 길을 찾아 가는 용도에는 쓸모 없는 것이 된다. 혹시 그 지도가 몇 천년 전 당시의 지형에는 일치하게 만들어졌다해도, 그 지도는 역사적, 지리적 가치 만을 가질 뿐, 여전히 지금 여기에서 길을 걷고 있는 내 길잡이 역할을 하지는 못한다. 일상에 필요한 지도는 지리 변화가 있을 때마다 업데이트 되어야 한다.    

어떤 회사에서 지도를 만들어 팔면서 실제 지형을 정확히 담은 지도라고 광고를 했다고 하자. 그런데 막상 그 지도를 들고 길을 가다보니 새로 만들어진 길은 없고, 없어진 길은 남아있고, 새로 놓인 다리도 없다면 그 지도를 계속 들고 다니겠는가? 업데이트 되지 않은 지도를 필요로 하는 사람은 뭔가 특별한 이유로 그런 지도를 찾는 사람들 외에는 없을 것이다. 대개의 사람들에게는 오늘 길을 찾는데 사용할 업데이트 된 지도가 필요하다. 

교회는 업데이트를 계속 해오고 있는가? 지도를 교회가 만든 전체 신앙 시스템, 업데이트를 해석이라 할 때 교회는 세상과 인간 인식의 변화된 현실에 맞는 해석을 지속적으로 해주고 있는가? 몇 백년 전에 그 해석이 멈춘 것은 아닌가? 아니 해석은 계속 진행되고 있지만 개별 교회에서 업데이트를 실행하고 있지 않는 것인가? 아니면 업데이트를 실행하고 싶어도 예전 지도에 익숙해진 성도들의 압력으로 실행을 못하고 있는 건가? 

어찌 되었든 제발 업데이트는 해야하지 않겠는가.. 

No matter how precisely and beautifully a map is made, if it does not match the actual terrain, it becomes useless for navigation. Even if the map was perfectly accurate thousands of years ago, it may have historical and geographical value, but it cannot guide someone walking the streets today. A map needed for everyday life must be updated whenever geographical changes occur.

Imagine a company sells maps, claiming they accurately reflect the real landscape. But as you walk with the map in hand, you find that new roads are missing, roads that no longer exist are still marked, and newly built bridges are absent. Would you continue carrying that map? Only those with special reasons would seek out an outdated map. Most people need an updated map to find their way today.

Has the church been keeping its maps updated? If we consider the church’s entire faith system as the map and interpretation as the updates, has the church been continuously providing interpretations that align with the evolving realities of the world and human understanding? Did the interpretation stop centuries ago? Or is interpretation still ongoing, but individual churches are failing to implement the updates? Or perhaps churches want to update but are unable to do so due to pressure from congregations who have grown too accustomed to the old maps?

Whatever the reason, shouldn’t updates be made?
